The Malawi National Malaria Control Programme endorses a new way of sharing malaria guidelines

Up-to-date evidence on the spread of antimalarial resistance is key to malaria control, as long as it is actively used and translated into data-informed policies. Demonstrating their commitment to aligning their medical practice with the latest malaria data, the Malawi National Malaria Programme recently endorsed the introduction of dynamically updated malaria treatment guidelines in the country.

To support this endeavour, MAGIC, a MARC SE-Africa partner, developed a Malawi-specific MAGICapp, which includes updated malaria guidelines and makes them easier to disseminate and access for health workers.

During the 5 March meeting, the MAGIC and Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Programme teams met with the Malawi National Malaria Programme (NMP) Malaria Case Management Technical Working Group and presented the newly restructured malaria guidelines. These were prepared based on the current national guidelines to facilitate the transition to the new app and enable easy navigation and overview. Meeting participants discussed the guidelines and offered feedback, and the session ended with the endorsement of the updates and packaging.

The launch of the MAGICapp in Malawi is planned for April 2026. For the MAGICapp's dynamically updated guidelines to have a positive impact on the fight against malaria in Malawi, they must be used easily and consistently. The next steps will therefore include incorporating feedback on the guidelines, consulting with stakeholders, and planning for dissemination before handing the application to the National Malaria Programme. The application has already undergone user testing and has been adapted to the feedback received, so the transition is as smooth as possible for the medical staff.

Going forward, recommendations will be updated annually, based on the latest malaria data.
