“We have to act before it’s too late”: World Malaria Day 2026
After more than a decade of artemisinin-based combination therapy for treating malaria, artemisinin resistance in Africa is growing, resulting in slower parasite clearance and endangering the efficacy of treatment. The spread of drug-resistant malaria is a major threat to malaria control and management, putting the health of millions at risk.
In a new MARC SE-Africa video, malaria researchers Prof Karen Barnes, Dr Joanitah Atuhaire, Dr Stephanie Van Wyk, and Dr Donnie Mategula reflect on their concerns about the current state of the fight against malaria, explain what is at stake if we don't act fast, and suggest a way forward.
